The Wan's 3E Method is characterized by its simplicity and its
straight forward and direct approach. The three "E's" stand for the
three basic principles underpinning this method, namely: “Easy”,
“Economical” and “Effective”.
The first principle (Easy) - states that treating a condition
becomes easy when it is based on clear and full understanding of the
nature of the body-mind and the arising condition. Clear discernment and
understanding of the human condition leads to the correct therapy.
The second principle (Economical) - refers to economy of practice
by using less to achieve more (i.e., fewer needles, smaller
prescriptions, shorter and fewer treatments etc.). After many years of
evaluation of diverse Chinese medical practices Grandmaster Wan deduced
that using only a few needles is more effective and significantly
shortens treatment time as well as overall duration.
The third principle (Effective) - simply implies that it actually
works. In other words, that the method has an inherent potency that is
not dependent on the patient’s and/or practitioner’s faith in the
outcome (also called the placebo effect that can sometimes be triggered
even if sugar pills or sham acupuncture is given). After all, faith
based medicine is not scientific, whereas true Chinese Medicine should
be based on precise scientific observations, reasoning and methodology.
Grandmaster Wan always maintained that a true treatment method, when
applied correctly, should always work irrespective of belief or faith,
just like fire burns whether one believes in it or not. Consequently,
once the problem is diagnosed accurately and the correct treatment is
employed, effective practice results from fully integrating and
utilizing all available resources (i.e our discernment and
understanding, our treatment skills and available physical resources) to
achieve the desired outcome within an optimal time frame.
